Council sticks to "general agreement" on patentability of software, while Commission opposes its definition of programmes that can be patented

Brussels, 14/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Danish Presidency noted on Thursday that the Competitiveness Council had reached a "general agreement on a common approach" regarding the directive that is to establish rules on the patentability of inventions using information technology software. It was not possible to adopt "general guidelines" due to the reservation of substance expressed by the European Commission and the scrutiny reservation on the part of France, Spain and Belgium.
