14/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - Monica Frassoni, joint President of the Greens/EFA Group, has called for the release of Giuseppe De Marzo, of the Federation of Greens in Italy, who was arrested on Tuesday by the Ecuadorian police, together with three local ecologists, for having taken part in a demonstration in the Mindo forest, to the North of Quito, to protest against the construction of a 503 kilometer pipeline that would carry crude Amazonian oil to the Pacific ports. Ms Frassoni recalls that the Italian company Eni-Agip is taking part in the construction, which began in July 2001, and which, she says, "in our opinion does not respect the World Bank's environmental and social policies".
