Malta assumes presidency for six months

Strasbourg, 14/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - Malta has taken over the presidency of the Council of Europe for six months, pan-European organisation that brings together 44 Member states. When presenting the priorities of its presidency, on 7 November, Maltese Foreign Minister Joseph Borg placed emphasis on: - pursuing the "political unification process of the Greater Europe"; - preparing the 3rd Summit of the Council of Europe (the Committee of Ministers should decide on this at its 14 and 15 May 2003 session); - political dialogue with the EU; - combating terrorism; - management of migratory flows; - follow-up to the World Summit of Johannesburg. Early-2003 the presidency intends organising a conference on migration policies with the countries of the Mediterranean Basin, to discuss the migration management strategy recommended by the Council of Europe.
