The Italian company ENEL has given up control of its third and last complex of electricity power plants as part of the opening up of the electricity market to competition. As part of a company called INTERPOWER, these power plants were acquired for EUR 874 million by a conglomerate incorporating ENERGIA ITALIANA (DE BENEDETTI group) and SUEZ (both with a fifty per cent stake) through its Belgian subsidiary ELECTRABEL (70%) and Italian electricity distribution company ACEA (30%). INTERPOWER has a production capacity of 2.611 megawatt and a turnover of EUR 443 million in 2002 with a workforce of 934.
