France and United Kingdom agree to close Sangatte refugee camp by end first quarter 2003

Brussels, 15/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - France and the United Kingdom have agreed to close the Sangatte refugee centre by the end of the first quarter next year at the latest. The French and British Home Secretaries, Nicolas Sarkozy and David Blunkett, announced this decision after their meeting on Friday, in Paris. Before giving its agreement, France called for the British legislation on asylum, which is more liberal than the French legislation, to be changed. Both ministers said in a joint...
