Council says Portuguese pig farmer aid is OK - Commission to take case to court

Brussels, 21/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The EU Council of Agriculture Ministers has unanimously approved a decision whereby the aid that Portugal provided its pig farmers in 1994 and 1998 is compatible with the single market, thereby contradicting the negative decision (issued on two occasions now) by the European Commission, which wanted the aid to be recovered. The Commission reacted sharply to the decision in effect endorsing the aid and had made it known that it will be taking Portugal...
