Turkey considers abolishing death penalty

Ankara, 21/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz declared on Sunday that his government was considering abolishing the death penalty to comply with the demands of the European Union. Although there have been no executions in Turkey since the mid-80s, the sentence is still in the penal code, and the EU has made of its abolition and improvements to human rights a precondition of beginning accession talks with Ankara.
