EU worried by violations of arms embargo contributing to continuation of conflicts in Sierra Leone and Angola

Brussels, 13/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Portuguese Presidency of the Council made the following declaration on behalf of the EU:

"The European Union is concerned about the effects of the violations of United Nations arms embargoes in conflicts in Africa. Despite the Lomé Peace Agreement seeking a lasting settlement in Sierra Leone and a United Nations arms embargo against the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), fighting between the Government and the RUF continues.
