Commission awaits developments in coup d'état before contemplating possible cessation of cooperation

Brussels, 06/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is extremely concerned by the situation in the Solomon Islands and condemns the attempted coup d'état which endangers the democratically elected government of this ACP country. The spokesman for Commissioner Poul Nielson nonetheless added it would be "premature to envisage suspending Union cooperation with the Solomon Islands". The Commission will wait to know the outcome of the crisis, the developments of which it is following...
