02/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – During a visit to Berlin, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said that he could meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky early next week if the technical talks between Kyiv and Budapest on the issue of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, in particular their right to use their mother tongue, were to conclude with an agreement. “So far, the negotiations are progressing very encouragingly and we hope they could even lead to a technical agreement this week,” Mr Magyar said, alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. An agreement on minorities could also make it possible to lift the Hungarian veto on the opening of the first cluster of chapters in Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations, which could then take place on 15 or 16 June.
