European Parliament calls for stronger action against invasive marine species

10/03/2026 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 10 March, the European Parliament called for urgent measures to combat the proliferation of invasive alien species in the marine environment, which threaten biodiversity, ecosystems and economic activities such as fishing and aquaculture. In adopting (528 votes in favour, 21 against, 62 abstentions) the own-initiative report by André Rodrigues (S&D, Portuguese) on this subject, the European Parliament stressed the need for appropriate management of these species and noted with concern the increased presence of some of them in several regions, such as the Pacific oyster and exotic crayfish species, the black-mouthed goby, the blue crab, the lionfish (Pterois miles), the blue-spotted cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii) and the silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and the Asian algae Rugulopteryx okamurae, particularly in the Mediterranean.
