19/12/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 19 December, the European Commission announced that it was renewing its adequacy decision with the United Kingdom, in the context of the reform of the rules for transferring data to third countries, redefined by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 (see EUROPE 13685/7). The Commission adopted a technical extension last June, to allow time to assess the new UK legal framework for data protection. This renewal ensures that personal data can continue to move securely between the European Economic Area (EEA) and the UK, as the Commission considers that the UK framework provides sufficient and equivalent safeguards. The adoption of renewal decisions follows the opinion of the European Data Protection Board and approval from the Member States (see EUROPE 13734/15). The new decisions are valid until 27 December 2031, with the possibility of renewal. (IS)
