On Thursday, 18 December, the European Commission launched a public consultation and a call for evidence to inform how the revision of the Regulation (2018/1999) on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action, expected in the last quarter of 2026, is designed.
Notably governing how national energy and climate plans (NECPs) are designed, this regulation establishes a governance mechanism to help the EU achieve the Energy Union’s objectives.
According to the European Commission, this text is being called into question by “a quickly evolving” European and international energy and climate landscape.
According to an assessment conducted in September 2024 (https://aeur.eu/f/k3w ), it is possible to further strengthen the governance of EU climate action and energy so as to “address remaining fragmentation, gaps, and uncoordinated national approaches”.
The revision should also further simplify planning and reporting obligations as well as reduce the administrative burden through increased digitalisation.
