On Thursday 11 December, the European Commission announced the publication of the revised 2026 European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) auction calendars, drawn up by the European Energy Exchange (EEX). The update follows the gradual inclusion of maritime transport in the ETS since 2024 and the extension of the system to non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from this sector.
In 2024 and 2025, shipping companies had to surrender allowances covering 40% and 70% of their verified emissions respectively. When the number of allowances surrendered is less than the emissions declared, the difference - which represented 54,243,768 allowances in 2024 - is cancelled.
In addition, the overall volume of allowances has been increased by 2,375,680 units to cover methane and nitrous oxide emissions from maritime shipping, based on data reported for 2024.
According to EEX, the total auction volume in 2026 will reach 408.2 million allowances on the common platform, with specific volumes for certain national platforms.
The auctions will start on 8 January. Those organised by the common auction platform will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. In Germany, they will be held every Friday from 9 January, and in Poland every fortnight on Wednesdays from 7 January.
The United Kingdom will also be auctioning a volume of allowances corresponding to its share of the national cap, and an auction for Northern Ireland will take place on 7 October.
