Speaking at the Erasmus+ Sport Information Day on Thursday 11 December, European Commissioner Glenn Micallef highlighted the limits of Erasmus+ funding for sport as the European Commission prepares its proposal for the 2028–2034 programme. According to him, only 14% of the projects submitted under the ‘Sport’ strand are currently funded, due to a lack of sufficient resources, even though around 2% of the total Erasmus+ budget is devoted to this strand.
The Commissioner pointed out that sport is a major means of combating the “inactivity pandemic” in Europe and of promoting healthier lifestyles.
Erasmus+ Sport gives priority to grassroots initiatives and open to all citizens from the youngest in age, and not just to professional athletes.
In particular, he cited the European Week of Sport, which has become a major annual event and involves millions of Europeans.
To this end, the European Commission is calling for a European sport model based on voluntary work, solidarity between amateur and professional sport, and better integration of sport into health, inclusion and social cohesion policies.
