On the occasion of the first anniversary of the fall of the Assad regime in Syria (see EUROPE 13541/18), EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and European Commissioners Dubravka Šuica and Hadja Lahbib welcomed, on Monday 8 December, the transitional authorities’ commitments to a peaceful and inclusive transition and the progress made since December 2024.
At the same time, they underlined the EU’s “deep” concern at the waves of violence that have spread to several regions of the country since March (see EUROPE 13598/3). “There can be no peace and stability in Syria without a process of national dialogue, reconciliation, and transitional justice, reinforced by the consolidation of state institutions and genuine security sector reforms”, they said in a joint statement, adding that it was necessary to ensure that all Syrians were protected and represented by the authorities and participated in building a “united, inclusive and democratic” Syria.
The High Representative and the Commissioners also condemned any foreign military action and any attempt to destabilise the country and undermine the prospects for a peaceful transition.
