On Thursday 30 October, the European Commission adopted an implementing decision setting out the actions and timetable for putting into service, by 2034, of the high-speed rail connection between Lisbon and Madrid, a link in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
This project, which aims to integrate the Iberian Peninsula into the high-speed rail network, is designed to reduce journey times over the 600 kilometres separating the Spanish and Portuguese capitals to 5 hours by 2030 and 3 hours by 2034.
In financial terms, Portugal has received €235 million from the ‘Connecting Europe Facility’ (CEF) for the Évora-Elvas section. Since 2014, Spain has mobilised €750 million from European cohesion funds and the post-Covid-19 NextGenerationEU recovery plan for the Extremadura-Madrid section.
In early November, the European Commission will present an action plan for the European high-speed transport network.
