Member States approve European Union Solidarity Fund aid for Spain and France

On Wednesday, 29 October, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) approved the proposal for a decision on the mobilisation of the European Union Solidarity Fund to assist Spain and France.

This aid comes in the wake of the floods that hit the Spanish region of Valencia in October 2024 as well as the damage caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte in December 2024 and Cyclone Garance in Réunion in February 2025.

It is envisaged that Spain will receive €945 million in aid (see EUROPE 13723/5). Mayotte is to receive €89.6 million in aid, and Réunion, €21.2 million (see EUROPE 13723/6). These territories had already received an advance—€24 million for Mayotte and €5 million for Réunion—to finance the initial emergency operations (see EUROPE 13644/35).

The EU Council still has to formally adopt the decision on the mobilisation of the Solidarity Fund. The European Parliament will put it to a vote on 13 November. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
