In the third quarter of 2025, seasonally-adjusted GDP increased by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the European Union compared with the previous quarter, according to the preliminary flash estimate published by the EU’s statistical office (Eurostat) on Thursday 30 October, based on incomplete data.
In the second quarter, GDP increased by 0.1% in the euro area and 0.2% in the EU.
Of the 15 Member States for which data are available, Sweden (1.1% of GDP) recorded the highest increase compared with the previous quarter, followed by Portugal (0.8%) and the Czech Republic (0.7%). Declines were recorded in Lithuania (-0.2%), Ireland and Finland (both -0.1%).
Growth was flat in Germany and Italy, but sustained in France (0.5%) and Spain (0.6%).
Unemployment. Also according to Eurostat, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area stood at 6.3% in September, stable compared to the rate recorded the previous month. In the EU, the rate was 6.0%, also stable compared with August.
Thus, 13.25 million people were unemployed in the EU, including 11 million in the euro area. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
