30/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 30 October, three leading MEPs issued a joint statement condemning the irregular and repressive nature of the electoral process in Tanzania, in the wake of the presidential and legislative elections. “What should have been a celebration of democracy, instead unfolded in an atmosphere of repression, intimidation, and fear. These elections cannot be regarded as free and fair,” said David McAllister (EPP, German), Mounir Satouri (Greens/EFA, French) and Merja Kyllönen (The Left, Finnish). MEPs called for the immediate release of Tundu Lissu and the restoration of fundamental freedoms. They urged “all democratic partners to stand firm in the defence of democracy and human rights”. (BD)
