FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS - SOCIETAL ISSUES / Democracy

29 States commit to strengthening support for integrity of information and independent media

Some 30 countries, including 16 from the EU (Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Ghana, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sierra Leone, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, Uruguay) committed, on Wednesday 29 October, to strengthen multilateral action in support of the integrity of information and independent media.

In times of increased polarisation, violations of the right to freedom of expression, misinformation, disinformation, information manipulation, and hate speech, we commit to working together to hold the line and pledge to strengthen support and resources, including financing as appropriate, to safeguard free and reliable information worldwide”, the countries said in a declaration.

In particular, they intend to strengthen multilateral and multistakeholder collaboration, and promise to work in partnership with civil society, the media and academia.

They also call for the development of the International Fund for Public Interest Media, a multilateral mechanism dedicated to protecting and supporting free and independent media.
