MEPs’ vote on criminalising smuggling networks postponed

13/10/2025 (Agence Europe)The vote in the European Parliament scheduled for Monday 13 October on criminalising smuggling networks, proposed by German S&D Birgit Sippel, has finally been postponed, several sources told Agence Europe (see EUROPE 13728/5). No new date has been given, as the next session of the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties is scheduled for early November. In the absence of an agreement with the EPP, the chances of obtaining a majority on Monday 13 remained uncertain and the German MEP is said to have chosen to avoid a rejection of her report at this stage. The political groups disagree in particular on the treatment of NGOs and those involved in helping migrants, which the S&D refuses to criminalise. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
