MEPs on the European Parliament Committee on Budgets adopted, on Monday 13 October, their draft resolution on the 2026 budget, which complements the position on the budget figures adopted on Monday 6 October (see EUROPE 13725/26).
With this draft resolution, the European Parliament Committee on Budgets is seeking to strengthen the EU’s key priorities while supporting competitiveness, defence and research. MEPs are opposed, for example, to the €1.3 billion cut in commitment appropriations for the 2026 budget (see EUROPE 13678/30), which they claim could harm key programmes such asErasmus+ and EU4Health. They are also opposed to the use of programme funds to pay interest on the Next Generation EU debt.
The European Parliament’s position on the 2026 budget will be voted on at its plenary session on 22 October.
Last year, a request for funding for “external physical barriers at the EU border” made by MEPs from the ESN (Europe of Sovereign Nations) group and supported by the Patriots for Europe (PfE) and the EPP resulted in a vote to reject the European Parliament resolution as a whole from the left and centre of the hemicycle (see EUROPE 13510/1).
Negotiations with the EU Council are due to start on 4 November. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
