13/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – Ahead of the ‘Environment’ Council meeting on 21 October (see other news), the CAN Europe coalition of environmental NGOs has written to the EU environment ministers (https://aeur.eu/f/ixj ) calling on them to ensure that the outcome of COP30 in Brazil is “ambitious, equitable and science-aligned”. At the global level, the coalition is calling on the leaders taking part in the COP to “provide a political response to the grave collective ambition gap” in the current set of ‘Nationally Determined Contributions’ (NDCs), which makes the 1.5°C target “out of reach” (see EUROPE 13728/10). It specifically calls on the EU to take the global lead in tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling energy efficiency and phasing out fossil fuels in a fair way, while ending fossil fuel subsidies by 2030. “The EU must champion a global fossil fuel extraction phase-out roadmap (...)”, adds CAN Europe.
