23/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – The European Union inaugurated its new VLQ quantum computer in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Tuesday 23 September. Co-financed by the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking EuroHPC (see EUROPE 13412/15) and a consortium of eight participating countries (Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands), VLQ is a key element of the quantum strategy aimed at making Europe a world leader by 2030. Once fully integrated into the EuroHPC Karolina supercomputer (see EUROPE 13374/42), VLQ will provide access to a hybrid classical-quantum architecture. With final calibration under way, VLQ should be operational by the end of the year. It will enable new applications such as quantum machine learning. Primarily intended for research and innovation, the VLQ will also be accessible to a wide range of European users, including those in academia, industry and the public sector. (AD)
