23/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Monday, 22 September, the Council of the European Union removed Mathias-Joseph Niyonzima, a known agent of Burundi’s national intelligence services, from the list of persons targeted by the EU’s restrictive measures. Mr Niyonzima had been criticised for playing a role in obstructing the search for a political solution in Burundi, specifically by inciting violence and repression during the demonstrations that broke out after Pierre Nkurunziza announced he was running for president in April 2015. Three other people are still on the list. The EU Council’s legal act recording Mr Niyonzima’s removal [from the list] was published in the Official Journal of the EU on Tuesday, 23 September.
