22/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – As the EU begins new negotiations on a free trade agreement with Thailand on 29 September, Europêche, the EU’s shipowners’ organisation, warned on Monday 22 September of the risk of Thai tuna flooding the European market, reinforced by the recent increase in US customs duties (see EUROPE 13611/7, 13675/33). The organisation is calling for tuna products to be excluded from the negotiations on this free trade agreement with Thailand, in order to “protect the competitiveness of sustainable European fleets”. European fisheries, which are subject to strict social and environmental standards, could be weakened by duty-free imports, according to Europêche, which insists on the need to apply strict rules of origin in order to guarantee “fair competition” between European and third-country producers.
