On Monday 22 September, the European Commission authorised the import of genetically modified maize for use in food and feed. The scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that this genetically modified maize is “as safe as its conventional equivalent”. However, this authorisation only covers the import of this genetically modified maize, not its cultivation in the EU.
