22/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – Environmental tax revenues in the EU increased in 2023 compared to 2022, rising from €334.6 billion to €341.5 billion, according to Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office, on Tuesday 22 July. Businesses accounted for 49.4% of total revenues, while households contributed 48.3%. In the Czech Republic, 81.2% of this revenue comes from businesses. The ratio is reversed in Ireland, with 60.3% of revenue generated by households and 38% by businesses. Luxembourg, Malta and Austria were able to count on a “significant contribution” from non-residents to these tax revenues, with 48.7, 17.4 and 14.1% respectively, Eurostat said. However, the share of environmental taxes in the EU’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell, from 2.4% in 2010 to 2% in 2023. (FS)
