10/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 10 July, the European Parliament strongly condemned the “atrocious” terrorist attack on the Mar Elias church in Damascus on 22 June, which killed at least 25 people and injured more than 60, as well as all threats against places of worship and attacks targeting religious and ethnic communities. In the joint resolution they adopted (625 votes in favour, 7 against and 10 abstentions), MEPS urged the Syrian authorities to take all necessary measures to curb inter-faith violence, ensure that those responsible are held to account, preserve freedom of worship and protect all communities. The European Parliament also calls on the EU to impose sanctions against those responsible for violations of these measures and to include the protection of religious communities and freedom of worship or religious belief in their dialogue with the transitional authorities.
