10/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 10 June, the European Parliament called for the immediate and unconditional release by the Central African authorities of the Belgian-Portuguese researcher Joseph Figueira Martin, “given the lack of credible and substantiated evidence to justify his detention”. In the joint resolution adopted (617 votes in favour, 4 against and 18 abstentions), the European Parliament strongly condemned the human rights violations committed during the arbitrary, ongoing and inhumane detention of Joseph Figueira Martin, “which seriously threaten his life and health”. It also calls on the Central African authorities to ensure that the armed groups operating in the country immediately put an end to their illegal and arbitrary arrests and attacks on humanitarian workers and members of NGOs, and demands that the perpetrators of rights violations and abuses do not go unpunished.
