European Parliament approves conclusion of new EU/Greenland fisheries agreement

On Tuesday 8 July in Strasbourg, the European Parliament approved the conclusion of the new fisheries agreement between the European Union and Greenland, adopting the report by Emma Fourreau (The Left, French) on this dossier (see EUROPE 13646/10) by 616 votes to 29 with 36 abstentions.

Furthermore, in adopting the other own-initiative report by Ms Fourreau (561 votes in favour, 109 against and 11 abstentions), Parliament emphasised the importance of the fisheries sector for Greenland and noted that the share of Greenland’s total allowable catches (TACs) allocated to the EU under the protocol remains relatively low.

The European Parliament remains concerned about the exploitation of northern prawn, particularly in certain areas of eastern Greenland where stocks are showing signs of decline.

It rejected amendments from The Left group, who deplore the European Commission's lacklustre response to US President Donald Trump’s threats over Greenland. By adopting an amendment from the EPP Group, the European Parliament is of the opinion that it is essential to ensure that the negative impact of trawling on the marine ecosystem is reduced to a minimum.
