DANISH PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION / Eycs

Danish Presidency of Council wishes to strengthen European Education Area, youth participation and European sport model

Denmark has held the rotating Presidency of the EU Council since 1 July. In the fields of education, youth, culture and sport, the Danish Presidency wishes to make progress on the revision of the framework for the European Education Area, the adoption of a new declaration on vocational training, the participation of young people in European policies, and the development of a ‘European Democracy Shield’ (see EUROPE 13567/5), which would focus on the media.

Denmark plans to speed up work on revising the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training. This framework, which supports the realisation of the European Education Area, aims to improve quality, equity, inclusion and lifelong learning, and will need to be adapted to current issues, such as the green and digital transitions.

The Danish Presidency of the EU Council also intends to initiate discussions on the EU’s future legislative programmes for education, youth and sport, with a view to the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) post-2027 (see EUROPE 13673/3)

In its programme, it has stressed the importance of Erasmus+ for young people’s mobility and European integration.

In the field of youth, the Presidency has stated that it wishes to strengthen the EU’s dialogue with young people and establish a reinforced framework for their active participation in shaping European policies in areas that directly concern them.

In the cultural sector, Denmark recalls the central role of culture in the defence of European democratic values, particularly in the light of current geopolitical issues and the extent of the risks associated with disinformation.

Finally, as far as sport is concerned, the Danish Presidency will be promoting greater transparency and democracy within international sports federations. It will support the European sport model (see EUROPE 13644/28), in line with the principles of solidarity, respect for fundamental rights and good governance.

The Presidency will initiate a debate to ensure that the European Union supports international sports federations and works more closely with them.
