07/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – The Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), Nasser Kamel, announced on Monday 7 July to a small group of journalists, including Agence Europe, that Syria is expected to rejoin the Union for the Mediterranean soon. The Syrian government had suspended its country from the organisation, which brings together some forty countries around the Mediterranean and the EU, on 1 December 2011. In recent weeks, the new Syrian government has contacted the UfM’s co-presidents (the EU and Jordan) to ask to rejoin the organisation. “The Member States did not object to Syria reoccupying its seat upon its request to lift its own suspension”, announced Mr Kamel, adding that decisions by the UfM were made by consensus. “The Syrians will resume their participation in our meetings very soon”, he added, without giving a specific date. The possibility of other countries joining the UfM is also under discussion. (CG)
