European Commission launches work plan on ecodesign of sustainable products and energy labelling

On Wednesday 16 April, the European Commission launched a 2025-2030 work plan to promote circular products for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Energy Labelling Regulation.

With this plan, the Commission is providing a list of products that will be subject to the introduction of ecodesign and digital labelling requirements as a matter of priority. These include textiles (clothing), furniture, tyres and mattresses, as well as steel and aluminium, which have been identified for their potential contribution to the circular economy.

Ecodesign and energy labelling requirements will address two aspects: product performance (minimum durability, availability of spare parts, minimum recycled content, etc.) and product information (carbon and environmental footprint, etc.).

A reparability index for products such as consumer electronics and small electronic appliances, as well as recyclability requirements, will be introduced.

The Commission specifies that the needs of SMEs will be taken into account. Delegated acts will establish these requirements “product by product or by groups of similar products”, explained the Commission. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
