The European Commission has noted progress on the priorities of the European Research Area (ERA), but continued investment is still needed, according to the 2024 Dashboard and Scoreboard, published on Tuesday 15 April.
The EU made progress in several areas between 2010 and 2022, namely open science, gender equality and global engagement. For example, the proportion of publications available in open access in the EU rose from 56.8% to 77.7%, and the proportion of women in the highest grade among academic staff rose from 19.7% to 27.3%. The percentage of foreign doctoral students in the EU rose from 16.3% to 22.7%. In general, the proportion of gross domestic expenditure devoted to research and development rose from 1.97% in 2010 to 2.27% in 2022.
Despite these upward trends, the report identifies areas for improvement, from collaboration between companies and research institutes, to the prioritisation of long-term research and innovation (R&I) investments and policy reforms. The Scoreboard’s conclusions underline the need to continue investing in human and financial R&I resources and partnerships in order to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and sustainability.
