16/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 16 April, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, condemned the adoption by the Georgian Parliament earlier in the day of a draft law prohibiting foreign donor organisations from making grants, whether monetary donations or in kind, to Georgian organisations or citizens without the government’s agreement, subject to a penalty of paying heavy fines. The bill also prohibits international organisations from organising events for Georgian political parties. This law “further shrinks civic space. Rushed and passed without consultation, it adds to recent repressive legislation. These steps undermine Georgia’s EU candidate status and core democratic principles”, Kaja Kallas stressed on X. Marta Kos also criticised the law in similar terms, calling for the cancellation of measures that run counter to democratic principles. (CG)
