EU’s agri-food surplus increased in first half of 2024

EU agri-food trade is proving robust, with a surplus of €33.7 billion between January and June 2024, an increase of €1.5 billion compared to the same period in 2023, according to the latest monthly report on agri-food trade, published on Friday 27 September by the European Commission.

From January to June, EU exports totalled €116.4 billion, 1% above the same period in 2023. Imports remained stable at €82.7 billion.

In detail: in June 2024, EU agri-food exports totalled €18.9 billion, representing a reduction of 5% compared with the previous month and -4% compared with June 2023. However, cumulative exports since January 2024 show a slight increase. In the first half of 2024, EU agricultural exports to the United States rose the most (+8%) due to higher olive/olive oil prices. In June 2024, EU agri-food imports totalled €13 billion (-12% compared with May 2024).
