The participants in the ministerial meeting on Sudan convened by Germany, France, the United States and the EU in New York during the United Nations General Assembly expressed “their deep concern at the catastrophic situation in Sudan”, according to a press release issued by the European External Action Service on Friday 27 September.
The participants “reiterated the commitments made in the Declaration of Principles adopted in Paris on 15 April 2024, one year after the start of the conflict, and announced their initiatives to advance peace in Sudan ”.
On 25 September, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, once again deplored the fact that the humanitarian situation in Sudan had deteriorated even further since the Paris conference.
“The ongoing brutal hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and other armed groups continue to cause devastating suffering throughout the country,” the participants condemned. They also expressed “ grave alarm” at the escalation of hostilities in El Fasher and called for an immediate end to the siege.
The warring parties were once again called upon to respect the “provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2736”, to resume negotiations immediately and to put a definitive end to the war. They were also asked to “commit, as a first step, to localised humanitarian pauses and to guarantee immediate humanitarian access to El Fasher, Sennar and Khartoum”.
