17/06/24 (Agence Europe) – The presidents of the European Council, Charles Michel, European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, as well as the High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, and Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson welcomed the release of Swedish European official Johan Floderus and his compatriot Saeed Azizi on X on 15 June (see EUROPE 13311/7). The European leaders praised Sweden for its work in securing these releases. Mr Floderus was arrested at Tehran airport in April 2022. Along with Mr Azizi, he was exchanged for Hamid Nouri, convicted by Sweden of war crimes during mass executions in 1988 in the Islamic Republic. “Other EU citizens are still being arbitrarily detained in Iran. We will continue to work together for their freedom with the Member States involved”, said Mr Borrell on X. (CG)
