17/06/2024 (Agence Europe) – Replacing Robert Fico at the informal EU Council of European heads of state on Monday 17 June, (see EUROPE 13410/1), the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, announced that Maroš Šefčovič had been nominated as candidate for European Commissioner. Currently Executive Vice-President of the Commission, Mr Šefčovič has been in charge of the ‘Green Deal’ since the departure of Frans Timmermans last August (see EUROPE 13262/2). “This nomination is based on his excellent long-term professional record and invaluable experience. It is also an expression of continuity and an appreciation of his solid position within the Commission”, the Slovak President told journalists. If approved by the European Parliament, Maroš Šefčovič will begin his third term as European Commissioner. (IS)
