According to the conclusions adopted on Monday 17 June, the EU Council is asking the European Commission to develop a “mechanism to monitor and forecast demand and supply for all relevant medical radioisotopes” based on the experience of the European Observatory on the Supply of Medical Radioisotopes.
These conclusions concern the security of supply of radioisotopes for medical use.
The EU Council stresses the leading role played globally by Europe in the supply of medical radioisotopes. The European Commission is invited to support research and facilitate innovation, benefiting where appropriate from the expertise and infrastructure of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), and to “foster joint efforts” in assessing and developing the critical skills needed to ensure the production and use of medical radioisotopes is safe and secure.
The Commission should also assess the framework for transporting radioisotopes for medical use, taking into account the sector’s specific needs as well as available production sites and methods.
