ERAC puts forward four main recommendations to make European Research Area a reality

Ahead of the plenary meeting of the European area of research and innovation committee (ERAC) on 26 June, on Friday 14 June the Council of the EU published a draft ERAC opinion on the second policy agenda for the European Research Area (ERA), covering the period 2025-2027. The draft opinion comprises four main strategic recommendations. The opinion will be one of the contributions sent to the Commission as part of the preparation of this political agenda.

Firstly, ERAC supports the introduction of a policy communication dimension in the forthcoming ERA Policy Agenda in order to provide inspirational messages in line with the wider policy objectives and ambitions to which the ERA Policy Agenda will contribute, in particular by developing the links between the priorities set out in the Pact for Research and Innovation and ERA’s concrete actions.

ERAC also recommends clearer communication on the ambition, objectives and priorities of ERA policies and actions in order to make ERA more tangible for stakeholders.

Another ERAC recommendation is that the next ERA Policy Agenda (2025-2027) should be more clearly policy-focused and have a more comprehensible structure, including clearly explained actions.

Finally, in order to ensure the implementation of the ERA Policy Agenda, ERAC advocates maintaining a high validation threshold and broad political support, maintaining the basis of the existing threshold of 50% of Member States for the final adoption of the next ERA policy agenda in the EU Council.
