European Commission publishes handbook to guide educators in supporting digital learning

On Monday 8 April, the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) published a guide designed to improve the digital skills of learners of all ages in the European Union.

Despite significant progress in education, only 54% of the European population had basic digital skills in 2021. This manual aims to increase this percentage by 2030.

Supported by the Erasmus+ programme and developed by a group of experts, the handbook draws on the European ‘DigComp’ framework to define the essential digital skills needed, including understanding information and data, communication, collaboration, creating digital content, security and problem-solving.

Each section offers practical methods adapted to different levels of education, from primary school to adult training.

As well as developing technical skills, the guide takes account of the ethical dimensions of digital education, highlighting the importance of safe, responsible and respectful use of technology. The aim is both to prepare students to use digital technologies effectively and to enable them to flourish in an ever-changing digital world.
