29/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Union has expressed its solidarity with Burkina Faso following the deadly attacks on a church in Essakane (north) and a mosque in Natiaboani (east) on Sunday 25 February. Dozens of Muslim and Catholic worshippers were massacred by gunmen during their religious services. “The EU strongly condemns these attacks carried out by radical armed groups and offers its sincere condolences to the families of the victims. The EU reaffirms its willingness to stand by the people of Burkina Faso to tackle the many challenges they face, in particular by focussing on the root causes of violent extremism and providing humanitarian aid as close as possible to the people affected”, said EU spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) Nabila Massrali in a statement on Wednesday 28 February.
