In a press release on Thursday 29 February, the European Commission announced that, on behalf of the EU, it has this week become a partner in the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Global Coalition for Social Justice, following approval by the EU Council.
Launched by the ILO in November 2023, the Coalition is a voluntary platform aimed at strengthening political commitment to promoting social justice.
“At a crucial time for ensuring just transitions and respect for workers’ rights worldwide, this initiative is in line with the objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and with one of the EU’s fundamental objectives of promoting decent work and social inclusion, as set out in the European pillar of social rights”, explains the press release.
The immediate areas for action are combating inequality, discrimination and exclusion, ensuring protection and improving resilience, and strengthening institutions of social dialogue.
The Coalition has over 150 partners, including governments, employers’ and workers’ organisations, international and regional organisations, development banks, businesses, NGOs and academic institutions.
Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal are already members of the Coalition.
