On Wednesday 28 February, the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) published its policy recommendations for the next mandate of the European Parliament and the European Commission (2024 to 2029).
ASD believes that the EU should focus on strengthening the defence industry’s ability to deliver necessary equipment on time and in sufficient quantity, by enhancing technological excellence, ensuring appropriate funding and access to funding, and guaranteeing coherence across EU policies.
The security industry should benefit from facilitated market uptake through a capabilities-driven approach, the fostering of synergies between technologies and EU programmes, and the development of a genuine EU security industrial policy.
Policies should also focus on helping the European aviation industry to become greener while maintaining its global competitiveness. According to ASD, this requires a strong partnership between industry and regulators to implement global and European sustainable aviation roadmaps with continued funding for research and development, efficient certification procedures and the creation of a Digital European Sky.
Finally, in order to foster a dynamic and innovative European space industry, the next policy cycle should ensure that the EU space budget reflects the EU’s increased ambitions, put in place a coherent European-wide space industrial policy, ensure rapid implementation of the Space Strategy for Security & Defence, and improve space security and resilience.
