29/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – Meeting in plenary session on Thursday 29 February, MEPs voted in favour of the text of the provisional agreement on the European Digital Identity Wallet, with 335 votes in favour, 190 against and 31 abstentions (see EUROPE 13288/12). Confirmed in November 2023, after having already been the subject of a political agreement in June, the text provides for every EU citizen to be able to use, on a voluntary basis, a Digital Identity Wallet to access online services. In practice, the future European Digital Identity Wallet will have to enable users to open bank accounts, make payments or store their digital documents - including official documents - centrally and identify themselves online. It is up to the user to decide whether or not to share their personal data. The text is due to come into force once the Member States have given their final approval. (IS)
