As announced by EUROPE, by adopting several amendments to the Sánchez Amor (see EUROPE 13360/6) and McAllister (see EUROPE 13360/5) reports on Wednesday 28 February, MEPs called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Until now, they had called for a permanent ceasefire subject to conditions (see EUROPE 13331/2).
In a Renew Europe amendment to the McAllister report, MEPs “call for a permanent ceasefire so that aid can be delivered to civilians in the Gaza Strip”. They went even further with the adoption of an amendment proposed by The Left to the Sánchez Amor report, calling in particular for an “immediate and permanent” ceasefire in Gaza in order to guarantee all its inhabitants uninterrupted access to food and water.
In an amendment suggested by The Left, MEPs call on the EU and its Member States to give UNRWA “their support and adequate funding to enable it to continue and develop its vital humanitarian work”, at a time when several donors have suspended their aid. During the plenary session debate on Tuesday 27 February, MEPs were divided on this issue (see EUROPE 13359/9).
In a Renew Europe amendment to the McAllister report, the European Parliament is also calling for those responsible for terrorist acts and violations of international law to be held to account and, to this end, is demanding that all possible war crimes be investigated.
