13/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 13 October, High Representative of the Union Josep Borrell welcomed the UN General Assembly’s vote condemning Russia’s annexation of several Ukrainian regions. The resolution was approved by 143 countries. Five countries (Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua, and Syria) voted against it, and 35—including China, India, and many African countries—abstained. “I am happy [with] this result”, explained Mr Borrell, while expressing that he was worried about the number of abstentions. “When more or less 20% of the world community decided not to support or not to reject the Russian annexation—for me, it is too many”, he added. According to him, there are “a lot of calculations [of] interest” among the abstentions. Mr Borrell felt it necessary to continue diplomatic work in order to convince them. (CG)
